A Bookshop Literacy Project - with a twist!

Frequently Asked Questions

- Are you a charity?

No, we are an independent non-profit business - it's very important not to misrepresent us as a charity, as we are not registered as such with the Charity Commission.

- What's going on at the tables in store?

We have a dedicated art space in store with FREE activities during opening hours. No need to book, just turn up!

We also offer bespoke paid sessions for groups such as childminders, home educators, and schools.

- Are there really FREE books?

Yes! We have a clearance section full of free books for all ages - these include things like Cookery and Gardening, Study Guides and Phonics; we don't think people should be unable to access these life skills and supports based on finances.

This section also includes things like books that are too damaged for us to be comfortable taking money for them, and books that may now have outdated information.

- Do you take book donations?

Yes! We will take any book, in any condition - there is always a home to be found (and it's not in landfill)!

- Do you buy used books?

No, all our secondhand books are donated to us in order to help fund our literacy work.

- Why are you only open at weekends?

Weekdays are spent on preparation and outreach - keep an eye out for local pop-ups and workshops near you!

Plus we are run entirely by volunteers, who give their time and energy to keep the project going.

- Are you looking for volunteers?

We are fully staffed at the moment, but we will post when spaces become available.

- Where do you get your funding from?

We don't have any! *sob*

The bookshop profits fund all our art activities, but we are always on the lookout for sponsors and donations.

Get in touch if you can help!

- Do you do school visits?

Yes! Visit our schools page or contact us for more info.

- Why do you do this?!

We really believe in the importance of reading, storytelling, literacy and creativity!

(Plus, we definitely don't want boring 'proper' jobs...)

We wanted to make books affordable and accessible to everyone, and create a space for you to tell your story, your way!
